Lunenburg schools report enrollment at 1,511; administrators to request COVID grant supplements

Assistant School Superintendent and Director of Finance James Abernathy reported to the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors that current enrollment stands at 1,511 students and that a large number of students remain home-schooled. Abernathy said some CARES reimbursements have been approved but funds have not yet been received, and he expects revenues to increase as reimbursements are processed.
Abernathy said he will present a request to accept COVID grant funds as a supplement to the school budget and expects an additional grant to be approved; he also said budget planning for fiscal year 2022–23 is underway and that enrollment projections will be refined after reviewing state projections and the sizes of incoming and outgoing classes. Supervisor Frank Bacon calculated that, at the current enrollment figure, the school budget would be reduced by about $300,000 and Abernathy stated that each student represents an average of $7,900.
The board did not take final budget action at the Dec. 9 meeting; Abernathy indicated he will bring grant-acceptance requests to a future meeting.
