Board sets preparations for public hearing on Meridian Waste request to raise landfill tonnage to 2,000 tons/day

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to direct county staff to prepare a public hearing on Meridian Waste’s request to raise the landfill’s daily tonnage limit to 2,000 tons.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee reported Meridian Waste’s formal request and noted the current agreement generally prohibits increasing tonnage before January 2022 without a public hearing. County Attorney Frank Rennie advised the board that the contract does permit the board to approve an increase at its discretion based on the vendor’s performance over the prior two years. Rennie said an increased tonnage level would also raise the fee due to the county to $2.50 per ton and would require an increased annual donation and $100,000 in road improvements as specified in the agreement.
Supervisor Alvester Edmonds moved to proceed with preparations for the public hearing; the motion passed 7–0. The board did not take a final vote on the tonnage change but authorized the next step of public notice and hearing preparation.
Next steps: county staff will prepare hearing materials and a public notice to allow community input before the board considers a final vote.
