County transfers $176,315.35 to cover demolition overrun; VATI broadband award announced

Lunenburg County approved a $176,315.35 transfer from the General Fund to cover an overrun on the old middle school demolition and received VATI grant funding to advance a universal broadband project, officials said.
Director of Planning and Economic Development Taylor Newton told the board the old middle school demolition was completed at a total cost of $954,027.84, which exceeded the budget by $176,315.35. The board voted to transfer $176,315.35 from the General Fund to the Economic Development Fund to cover the excess costs.
Newton also announced the county received Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) grant funds to support universal broadband coverage. She said the county is forming a citizen advisory committee to aid project planning and that Planning Commission meetings will move to the first Thursday of each month.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee said former staff had committed to the Tobacco Commission that the demolition project would be completed; the additional work was not included in the original bid and the county would absorb the extra costs. The board approved the fund transfer by roll call vote.
