Lunenburg schools accept $740,250 in ESSER II funds; Victoria Elementary closed temporarily amid staff COVID‑19 cases

The Lunenburg County School Division accepted and appropriated $740,250 in ESSER II "Unfinished Learning" funds at the board’s Jan. 13 meeting, Assistant School Superintendent and Finance Director James Abernathy told supervisors.
Abernathy said the award arrived after the FY2022 budget was approved and does not require any additional local transfer. He asked the board to accept and appropriate the funds, which will revise the total school budget to $22,325,599. The board voted unanimously to accept the funds.
Abernathy also reported enrollment rose to 1,516 from 1,511 the prior month. He said Victoria Elementary School would close the following day because more than half of its staff either tested positive for COVID‑19 or were quarantined following exposure; the division planned to evaluate reopening after the holiday closure. He said the division was not yet planning a full return to virtual learning and that, if necessary, closures would target schools or grade levels rather than the entire system.
Separately, the board approved appropriating budgeted local funds for the current quarter (January–March) and to reevaluate prior to the fourth quarter appropriation.
"The school division was awarded $740,250 in ESSER II Unfinished Learning funds," Abernathy said during his report.
