Council hears requests for traffic sign, increased patrols and updates on local development

Council Member Rufus Lee asked the city to install a larger warning sign on Mulkey Avenue and requested that Water Department drivers slow when passing the area because an autistic child lives there. Lee also expressed concern that some Geneva residents discharged from larger hospitals are not being steered back to services in Geneva and said citizens should know they may request where services are provided.
Council Member Zack Dodson reported doing a ride-along with the police department, commended the department’s work and asked for increased patrols on Franklin Avenue after observing suspicious activity. Police Chief Mock reported recruiting progress, saying the department has recruits for three open positions.
Mayor Hayes reported a contract extension on property for the industrial park, a scheduled walk-through for a new park, and the need to set a fee for a property lease at the airport. He said a new restaurant plans to locate in Geneva and singled out Council Member Scott Stough for his involvement in recruitment. Dodson also announced that the Dollar General south of the river is scheduled to open Feb. 8 as a DG Plus store.
Street and Sanitation Superintendent Brewer reported several trees requiring removal on Glendale Avenue and Purvis Street and said ownership for the Glendale lot must be established; Brewer said the tree reported on Mulkey is on private property and not city right-of-way.
Ms. Tewanna Marks, during public participation, reported on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. walk, thanked the city for support and thanked the rescue squad for assistance in a family matter.
No formal council action was recorded on the traffic-sign request, increased patrols, or industrial-park contract extension during the meeting; these items were reported for follow-up.
