Chippewa County road board approves payroll and vouchers, praises crews after heavy snow

The Board of Chippewa County Road Commissioners approved payroll of $266,988.86 and vouchers of $161,552.61 at a routine meeting Dec. 31 in Sault Ste. Marie, Vice-Chairman Charles Moser said as the board opened the session at 8:04 a.m.
Manager Laitinen told commissioners that negotiators will "continue negotiations next week" and that the MDOT contract is "settled except for the seats at the table," adding praise for staff efforts during recent storms: "I would like to give everyone lots of credit, everyone has been doing a great job with the amount of snow we have received and the weather." Foreman Johnston reported crews have been working extended shifts, saying "Some of the guys are on 30 days straight," and that certain roads required V-plows so trucks could pass.
Commissioner Sprague moved to accept the agenda and led several routine approvals. The board recorded the motions to accept the agenda, to authorize the payroll and vouchers from the County Road Fund (subject to audit), and to place the regular (Dec. 18), closed (Dec. 18) and special (Dec. 23) meeting minutes on file; each motion was noted in the minutes as "MOTION CARRIED." The payroll and voucher payments were authorized without a recorded roll-call tally in the transcript.
There were no public comments and no new business. Several staff and department heads gave brief status reports, most reporting no items. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 a.m.; Deputy Clerk Abby Sillers and Vice-Chairman Charles Moser signed the minutes.
The board will continue contract negotiations next week; the MDOT contract remains unresolved with respect to representation at negotiation tables.
