Benzie County approves patrol car purchases, K9 and other public-safety equipment

Benzie County commissioners on Nov. 14 approved a series of public-safety purchases for the sheriff’s office and county jail.
The board declared two older Chargers surplus and authorized the sale of the vehicles, with proceeds deposited to the equipment replacement fund, and approved purchase of three new patrol vehicles in a not-to-exceed amount of $195,000 from the Capital Fund and the 425-patrol car expense.
The board also approved purchase of a drug enforcement vehicle not to exceed $60,000 with $30,000 from contingency in the TNT Officer Millage Fund and $30,000 from Capital Improvements, and approved the related budget amendments. Commissioners approved purchase of a dual-purpose police K9 from Fresh Coast K9, LLC for $17,000 with funds from the K9 Fund.
Separately, the board accepted proposals from Western Detention and Johnson Controls to replace the deadlatch on the jail control room door for up to $6,000, with funds from the Capital Fund and Jail Fund.
Greg Hubers was present to answer questions on the patrol vehicles, the drug enforcement vehicle and jail security work. The related motions carried by roll call (all aye; Commissioner Markey excused). Commissioner Nye abstained on the restroom remodel vote that occurred in the same section of the agenda.
