Maples administrator reports near‑capacity census and generator problems; waiting list grows

Megan Garza, administrator of The Maples long‑term care facility, told the Benzie County Board on Jan. 23 that recent admissions have been county residents or relatives and that the facility’s year‑to‑date census is 97.5 percent. Garza said The Maples has a waiting list of 12 Benzie County residents and that staff morale is high.
Garza also reported staffing changes: in August the facility relied on 20 contract staffers; as of the meeting there were six contract staff positions remaining. She said the facility is working with Emergency Management on its emergency‑preparedness plan and noted problems with a new generator. Donald Shafer explained some of the generator issues during the presentation.
No board action was taken on the Maples report; the administrator’s update was received as informational.
