Benzie County authorizes up to two additional corrections officers; millage to be considered later

Sheriff Rosa, Undersheriff Hubers and Jail Administrator Dan Smith requested authorization for two additional corrections officers based on a staffing analysis from the Michigan Department of Corrections. The Benzie County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to authorize up to two additional corrections officers, subject to available funding.
Board members discussed that the existing jail-operations millage is expiring and that any request to renew or replace it would be returned to the board for consideration and placement on the August 2024 ballot if the commissioners choose to proceed. No final millage language or ballot placement decision was made at this session.
The motion to authorize the positions was made by Commissioner Jeannot and seconded by Commissioner Warsecke and carried on a unanimous roll call. County administration and the sheriff’s office will work on funding details and next steps for hiring.
