Ferry terminal design update: Machin Engineering aims to finish by May 2025; drone testing planned

Becki King, Charlevoix County fiscal officer, provided the Transportation Authority a design update from Machin Engineering at the Jan. 14 meeting, saying the firm has started work and intends to finish by May 2025.
King reported that soil testing for the ferry landing is complete and that Machin will use drone testing for additional site data; the county will receive a seven-day notice to notify affected parties before drone operations. King also said ownership of the parking area by the landing needs to be determined and that the project could go out for bid once ownership and design details are settled.
King also discussed the county’s control over ferry signs, saying the county — not MDOT — manages the signs and pays a yearly subscription for sign-control software; maintenance costs are separate and not covered by that subscription.
Board members did not receive public comment on the update. Next steps include resolving parking-area ownership and completing design tasks so the project can be released for bidding.
