Ferry on backup generator; ridership slow and new payment options under review

Manager Gordie Russell told the Charlevoix County Transportation Authority on June 10 that daily ridership is running about 300–350 cars and that the ferry is operating on its second generator while the primary generator is down and awaiting assessment by AIS.
"The Ferry is running on the 2nd generator, primary generator is down, waiting on AIS to assess," Russell said. He described early-season ridership as a "slow start." The board heard no public comment.
Transportation Coordinator Joe Kroll presented proposed verbiage for a historical marker sign and raised payment-system options for next year. Kroll said Square is a possible offline, handheld alternative to Token Transit, noting an estimated 3% charge; staff will continue investigating other options.
Fiscal Officer Becki King provided an update from vendor Machin and said she will ask Machin representatives to attend a future meeting to respond to questions in person. The board did not take further operational action at the meeting; staff follow-ups and the AIS assessment are outstanding.
