Barry County committee adopts 2025 pay scale for elected officials, forwards item to full board

The Barry County Board of Commissioners Personnel and Human Services Committee on Sept. 19 adopted a 2025 adjusted pay scale for elected officials and agreed to place the item on the Board's Committee of the Whole agenda for Oct. 1, 2024.
Commissioner David Jackson moved to adopt the Administrator's Office 2025 adjusted salaries for elected officials; Commissioner Catherine Getty supported the motion. The committee recorded "All ayes," and the motion carried. County Administrator Eric Zuzga and Deputy County Administrator Luella Dennison had presented the Administrator's recommended pay scale covering 2023 through 2025; Jackson offered a separate adjusted pay-scale proposal that the committee also reviewed.
The committee discussed the potential need for a broader compensation study to review county pay and alignment with comparable employers. Members weighed the two pay-scale proposals and reviewed the figures presented by Jackson and by the Administrator's Office.
Commissioners also debated their own pay. Commissioner Michael Callton moved, with Getty's support, to set 2025 commissioner salaries in line with the increases applied to other General Fund employees from 2023 to 2025 and to increase commissioners' salaries by 2% annually in 2026, 2027 and 2028. The minutes do not record a vote or the outcome of that motion.
Administrator Zuzga reported that an elected official had raised a question about chief deputies' salaries; he said the question was forwarded to the county attorney for review and noted that chief deputies' salaries must be set by Nov. 1. The committee recorded no public comment during the meeting.
The committee adjourned at 11:03 a.m. The elected-officials pay scale will appear on the Board's Committee of the Whole agenda on Oct. 1; the county attorney's review will determine next steps on chief deputies' pay.
