Barry County commissioners approve $108,717.05 in claims, transfer GIS analyst and advance pay steps for corrections officers

At their Sept. 24 meeting the Barry County Board of Commissioners approved claims totaling $108,717.05 and addressed several personnel and administrative items.
Commissioner Mark Doster questioned reimbursements for Sheriff Leaf (parking at a conference in Florida) and Deputy Noteboom (fuel purchases when a county gas card was not working). County Administrator Eric Zuzga verified the reimbursements complied with county policy because the sheriff attended the conference as a member of the hosting organization. The claims motion, moved by Commissioner Jon Smelker and supported by Commissioner Catherine Getty, passed on a roll-call vote.
The board approved transferring the county’s GIS Analyst position (1.0 FTE) from the Information Technology Department to the Planning & Zoning Department. The motion was moved by Commissioner Jon Smelker and supported by Commissioner David Hatfield; the roll call vote was unanimous.
Also approved was a proposed grievance settlement affecting two corrections officers. The board voted to move Corrections Officers Kaeli West and Susan McCracken ahead one year on the pay scale and to provide retroactive payments calculated on 2,080 hours at the hourly difference between the two-year and three-year pay steps. The minutes record a retroactive payment amount of $2,350.40 per employee; the payments are contingent upon written acceptance of the settlement by the Corrections Division. That motion was moved by Jon Smelker and supported by Catherine Getty and approved unanimously.
Other business included County Administrator Eric Zuzga announcing that monthly department-head meetings will begin in October, an ongoing search for new financial software and plans to increase community outreach. Commissioners reported on local township meetings, a request for night meetings and discussion of a communications-tower rebuild on Swift Road. Public comment earlier in the meeting included Elden Shellenbarger announcing a write-in candidacy for county prosecutor.
