Houghton County approves airport manager pay bump, canvasser per diem and several appointments

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 13 approved several personnel and appointment actions, including a pay and classification increase for Airport Manager Dennis Hext, payment to canvassers for recount work and multiple board reappointments.
Commissioner Roy Britz moved, and Commissioner Glenn Anderson seconded, to move Airport Manager Dennis Hext from an MP-10 to MP-11 position at a salary of $82,000 effective Jan. 1, 2023; the motion passed unanimously with funding to be provided from airport fees. The minutes note Hext has served at the airport for more than 20 years.
The board also approved payment of a full-day canvasser per diem of $75 and mileage reimbursement for Charlie Markham for travel to Marquette for the recount. Several reappointments were approved by voice vote: Glenn Anderson and James Hainault to the Houghton County Land Bank (3-year terms); John Larson and Allan Aho to the Houghton County Planning Commission; and Steve Palosaari to a two-year term on the UP State Fair Authority. Sheriff Joshua Saaranen recommended Dillan Malone for the 911 Committee and the board appointed Malone.
The meeting later recessed to closed session and, upon reopening, the board adopted a resolution provided by Attorney Charles A. Lawler to settle litigation; that vote was recorded as unanimous.
