Houghton County commissioners approve resolutions, appointments and ARPA-funded services

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted on a series of routine and administrative items during its Feb. 14, 2023 regular meeting.
The board approved minutes from Jan. 17 and Jan. 20 following a motion by Commissioner Gretchen Janssen and a second by Commissioner Roy Britz. The board also approved paying bills totaling $1,566,330.48 (roll call vote: Anderson, Keranen, Tikkanen, Janssen, Britz — Yes: 5).
Key approvals and appointments included adopting Resolution #23-02 honoring the Michigan Association of Counties on its 125th anniversary and adopting Resolution #23-03 (policy updates and an ACH authorization) after motions and roll-call votes. The board appointed Kathleen Johnson to the CCMH Services Board of Directors for a three‑year term and appointed Karin Cooper as the county’s representative to the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission.
The board approved an EGLE Recycling Micros Grant for $10,000 to support signage, mailings and Michigan Tech research; approved updates to the county E‑911 Service Plan as administrative changes; and authorized $46,000 in ARPA funds to UPEA for courthouse professional services. The board also approved several smaller appropriations (WUPPDR second-quarter, Northwoods Rail Transit Commission $350, UPCAP dues $1,100) and authorized travel for Nicole Jollimore to the 2023 Magistrate Conference. Public commenters urged further review of a proposed Health Code, and the board adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
