Canal View leaders propose new childcare center to fill roughly 1,000‑slot gap

On Feb. 14, 2023, representatives of Canal View presented a proposal to the Houghton County Board of Commissioners to open a new childcare center intended to address a countywide shortage of childcare seats.
Kim Salmi and Iola Brubaker of KFRC told the board Houghton County is short “approximately 1,000 childcare spots,” and described a plan that would use a Copper Country Intermediate School District classroom capable of serving roughly 70–75 children. Salmi said Canal View would subsidize one-third of childcare costs, and Brubaker said she has a potential director candidate and that staff recruitment would follow once leadership is in place.
Commissioner Gretchen Janssen noted MI Works offers assistance for employer‑linked childcare. Salmi added that a local church has offered land for a playground and that the facility’s business plan is under development. Brubaker said state startup funding is available on a first‑come, first‑served basis for one-time startup costs and supplies.
The presenters estimated the center could support 20–30 new employees for Canal View, and described the planned facility as aiming to be self‑sufficient. Board members encouraged other entities to participate in partnerships and asked staff to continue working on partnerships and planning.
