Sumter County highlights new external auditor, budget figures and litter‑reduction roundtables

Sumter County Administrator Gary Mixon reported at the April 26 meeting that council approved contracting with Mauldin Jenkins CPAs and Advisors as the county's new external auditing firm to replace Webster Rogers after nine years. Mixon also summarized a budget workshop in which elected officials including the coroner, public defender and solicitor requested additional personnel and funding. At the time of the meeting, the county's budgeted revenues were $54,672,976 and budgeted expenditures were $56,105,438; staff noted no changes had been made to the budget during the workshop.
Mixon announced an "On The Table" series of community roundtables on April 30 involving the Litter Advisory Board, the City of Sumter, the Development Board and other local partners. Each quadrant will have a discussion group and may apply for a "Beyond the Table" grant that includes $1,000 from Sumter County and $1,000 from the Central Carolina Community Foundation for local projects to address litter.
Public comment included Dr. Brenda Williams requesting that the Family Unit receive one‑tenth of a reported $10,000,000 in ARPA funds and urging repair of the Manning Avenue Bridge, saying, "Justice delayed is justice denied." Jackie Hughes and Ronnie Rhodes also spoke during the public comment period; Rhodes offered services through the SC University Research 1890 Program and provided contact information to council.
