Residents urge enforcement after claimed encroachment and raise concerns about dilapidated properties

At the July 12 Sumter County Council meeting, two residents used the public-comment period to press officials on housing and neighborhood-safety issues.

Patricia Lynn Fowler said she purchased a home at 5685 Beech Creek Drive in April 2022 and moved in April 30. She told council that on June 13 a neighbor, identified in the minutes as Mr. Brown, had his land surveyed and concluded builders placed part of a newly built house on his property. Fowler said the builders relied on a 1985 survey rather than a current boundary survey and that a county building official (she identified him as Mr. Philips) told her she was "good to go" despite alleged setback problems. Fowler said she had a new survey performed on July 9, 2022, with results expected July 13, and that she was told stepping off her patio would place her on Mr. Brown's land. She also raised concerns about contaminated property devaluing neighboring homes and said High Hills Water Company had not submitted certification documents since 2020, per her account. Fowler asked council to enforce building codes, avoid allowing development on contaminated land, and provide more relief for affected homeowners.

George Bates urged the county to address burned-out and dilapidated homes, overgrown lots near the Wedgefield Post Office and just off Cougar Way, feral-cat problems and the risk that abandoned properties may be used for illicit activity.

The minutes record the comments but do not show immediate staff responses or council direction on follow-up steps; the meeting adjourned at 6:27 p.m.
