County reviews Summer Youth Program wrap-up; Mixon named to state opioid recovery board

Sumter County highlighted its Summer Youth Program’s completion and recognized student participants; County Administrator Gary Mixon announced his appointment to the South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund Board, confirmed through April 30, 2026.
County Administrator Keysa Rogers reported that the Summer Youth Program concluded Aug. 5 and held an end-of-program ceremony Aug. 8 at Patriot Hall. Rogers said participating students worked 16 hours per week for four weeks and received weekly mentoring sessions. Mentors or presenters included Chairman James T. McCain Jr. (county government overview), Kim Geddings (Judicial Center tour), Judges Gordan and Gamble (Summary Court overview), Dr. Jessica Greene (mental health), Kimberly Diamond (leadership skills), Santana Green (choices and consequences), and representatives from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Rogers read a recommendation letter from Summary Court Administrator Ezestra McFadden and recognized student Adrianna Weeks, of Council District Five. She also noted Jaliyah Brunson received recommendations for citizenship, leadership and performance for work with the Office of County Council.
Administrator Gary Mixon reported he was appointed to the South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund Board by the chair of the S.C. Senate and confirmed by Gov. Henry McMaster; his term runs through April 30, 2026. The board will oversee disbursement of opioid recovery funds, Mixon said.
