Council grants first readings to two property conveyances for art park and affordable housing

Sumter County Council on Tuesday granted first readings to two ordinances that would transfer county-owned parcels for community use.
County Attorney Johnathan Bryan presented Ordinance #22-978 to convey the property at 645 Manning Avenue to the City of Sumter. A letter from City Manager Deron McCormick said a city representative, David Weeks, is working on a community art park concept for the site. Councilman Charles T. Edens moved for first reading and Councilman Artie Baker seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Bryan also presented Ordinance #22-979 to convey 538 South Sumter Street to the Sumter County Community Development Corporation (CDC). Property manager Chris Hilditch said the lot is adjacent to other CDC-owned parcels and could be used to place a low-to-moderate income family in housing on the site. Vice Chairman James R. Byrd moved for first reading, Councilman Charles T. Edens seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
No final conveyances were completed at the meeting; both ordinances received first reading and will return for subsequent consideration.
