Land Use Committee reviews FEMA flood maps; Oct. 27 deadline flagged for ordinance adoption

The Land Use Committee briefed Sumter County Council on updated FEMA flood maps during the Aug. 9 meeting. Committee Chair Charles T. Edens said staff from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, represented by Jessica Parks, explained the map-development process and how changes could affect homeowners.
Edens told council that if Sumter County elects to accept the updated maps, the county must adopt a corresponding ordinance and forward it to FEMA by Oct. 27, 2022. Planning Director Helen Roodman participated in the discussion. The report was received as information; the committee did not take a recorded vote at the Aug. 9 meeting.
Council members were briefed on the homeowner impacts and the procedural timeline; staff will return with any recommended ordinance language and scheduling required notices.
