Sumter County Council approves calendars, proclaims Respiratory Care Week and hears public requests for sidewalks, signage and staffing

At its Oct. 11 meeting Sumter County Council adopted the 2023 employee holiday and council meeting calendars, proclaimed Oct. 23-29 Respiratory Care Week, and heard three public commenters urging sidewalks and cleaner commercial edges, directional signs for restaurants, and more sheriff and code-enforcement presence.
Sumter County Council on Oct. 11 approved administrative calendars for 2023, adopted a proclamation recognizing Respiratory Care Week, and heard public comments from residents asking for sidewalks, restaurant directional signs and greater sheriff and codes-enforcement staffing.
The clerk presented the proposed 2023 employee holiday calendar; council members asked whether additional holidays were included. Clerk Mary W. Blanding confirmed no additional holidays and noted Election Day would be listed on the 2024 calendar (it is only granted in election years). Vice Chairman James R. Byrd moved to adopt the employee calendar; Councilman Eugene R. Baten seconded and council adopted it unanimously.
Blanding then presented the 2023 County Council meeting calendar (second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m.; one meeting in December). The council adopted that calendar by unanimous vote.
The council also adopted a proclamation declaring Oct. 23-29, 2022, Respiratory Care Week in Sumter County. Susan Hilditch of Prisma Health Tuomey and several hospital representatives received the proclamation.
Public comment included: Ella Reed Sharrod requesting sidewalks and paving in the Crosswell neighborhood, and reporting illegal dumping near Morris College and a local Dollar General; Tasha Gardner asking the council to consider directional signage for restaurants for motorists exiting U.S. 76/378, Pike Road and Highway 521; and George Bates thanking council for road repairs while urging more deputy patrols and additional codes-enforcement resources.
The meeting adjourned at 6:42 p.m.
