Airport officials raise safety concerns about proposed cell tower; commissioners approve $45,000 for New Hradec Workman Hall

Representatives of the Dunn County Airport Authority told the county commission on Feb. 18 that they had not been contacted by telecom companies about a proposed cell tower sited close to airport property. Mike Schollmeyer and Greg Synnes said Vertical Bridge and T-Mobile had not responded to airport inquiries; LCC Telecom did not initially respond to the airport authority either. County attorney Pat Merriman advised the board to consider an executive session with attorneys to discuss safety and legal issues related to the tower’s proposed proximity to airport operations.
A representative from LCC Telecom, John Burchfield, appeared and told the board the letter sent was a formality and that the company is meeting with three landowners to locate an alternate site for the tower.
In a separate community item, Ray Veverka and Kirk Pavlicek of New Hradec Workman Hall requested $45,000 from the county to replace flooring in the hall, which serves as a public meeting and banquet space. Commissioner Heiser moved and Commissioner Kleemann seconded a motion to donate $45,000; the motion carried on a roll-call vote with all commissioners voting aye. County staff also said the food pantry’s final walk-through of its new building is scheduled for next week and that Dollar General will donate overages of food to the pantry under an existing agreement.
Attorney Merriman’s suggestion of an executive session was a recommendation only; no executive session or special legal action was recorded during the Feb. 18 meeting. Telecom representatives indicated they were pursuing alternate landowner options.
