Delaware County amends sheriff's holiday pay to eight hours of comp time for worked holidays

Human Resources Director Vicki Cossairt presented the requested review, noting the sheriff had raised concerns about the cost of paying time-and-a-half for holiday work. Under the amended policy approved by the board, sheriff's office employees who work a holiday will receive eight hours of paid time off, which employees must use within the same calendar year. Employees not scheduled to work the holiday will not receive pay for that day. Cossairt said the change affects only the Sheriff's Office; other elected officials' holiday policies remain the same.
The minutes record that a majority of the elected officials present voted in favor of the change: Commissioners David Poindexter and Jake Callihan, County Clerk Barbara Barnes, Treasurer Treasa Earp, Assessor Larena Ellis-Cook and Sheriff Ray Thomas. The board directed Human Resources and payroll to update procedures to reflect the change.
The minutes do not specify retroactivity or whether already-scheduled holiday pay for upcoming pay periods would be adjusted; the county clerk and human resources department will finalize administrative details.
