Commissioners approve rezoning, property sales, alcohol licenses and budget amendments

At its July 12 meeting the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners approved several routine but consequential items affecting land use, revenue and licenses.
The Board approved multiple rezoning recommendations from the Planning Commission, including parcel-specific changes (motions carried 4-0). Chairman Jensen opened a first reading for a Unified Zoning Ordinance text amendment to update definitions and storage rules and to replace certain ordinance sections; the Board advanced the item for public notice.
The Board accepted a $2,000 bid from Sean Stokes for county property at 1545 Riverbend Road (parcel 12-279-03-001) and a $7,000 bid from Kenneth Shelton for a tract on the South Dalton Bypass (parcel 12-281-29-000); motions authorized the chairman to sign closing documents.
Following the public hearing, the Board approved on-premise alcohol licenses for Cracker Barrel #5 (938 Market St.), Autry’s Diner (4111 S. Dixie Hwy Unit 9000) and Brotherhood Billiards (4111 S. Dixie Hwy Unit 4000). Owner Rick Autry answered a question about past law-enforcement responses; no other comments were offered.
Finance Director James Garvin presented the May 2021 financial statement and the Board approved it 4-0. The Board also approved 2021 budget amendments that included accepting $300,000 from county schools for School Resource Officers, adjusting paving allocations per an SDS agreement, adding funds for Public Works shed repairs and material, reconciling building lease and utilities, and accepting a $19,500 matching donation for Prater’s mill.
The Board approved a motion of no objection to a City of Varnell annexation for three parcels and authorized Public Works assistance to repair and pave a Varnell post-office parking lot with city-paid materials.
