Whitfield commissioners approve bleachers, address Riverbend Park budget gap on sod/irrigation

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on July 12 approved several Riverbend Park items and moved to limit spending where bids exceeded project budgets.
The Board accepted a $55,430 bid from Outdoor Aluminum for portable soccer bleachers; funding will come from the voter-approved 2020 SPLOST. For a sod and irrigation contract, Southern Turf and Fields submitted a low bid of $483,119, but the project’s budget is capped at $350,000. The Board authorized staff to enter value-engineering discussions with the low bidder to bring the project within budget. The motion to pursue value engineering passed 4-0.
Separately, the Board approved Dalton Utilities’ customer-choice power service to serve Riverbend Park after comparing it with a Georgia Power offer. Georgia Power bid 4.0¢ per kWh for the first 12 months then a variable rate, while Dalton Utilities offered a firm 4.8¢ per kWh that the Board accepted; the motion passed 4-0.
The Board also approved a permanent easement with Dalton Golf and Country Club for additional parking behind the new Tax Commissioner building, and earlier in the meeting accepted a $2,000 bid for a county property on Riverbend Road. The Board directed staff to proceed with the contracts and value-engineering discussions as applicable.
