Commissioners approve multiple rezoning requests, accept road‑closure petition and set public hearing

Whitfield County commissioners on Sept. 13 approved a package of land‑use items, including several rezoning requests recommended by the planning commission, acceptance of a road‑closure petition and a non‑objection to a City of Varnell annexation.
Commissioner Robby Staten moved and Commissioner Barry W. Robbins seconded approval of multiple rezoning requests recommended by the planning commission. Approved changes included: Kenneth Adams (Heavy Manufacturing M‑2 to Rural Residential R‑5) for a 0.13‑acre parcel at 111 Powell Drive; Joe and Mary Ann Newton (R‑5 to General Agriculture GA) for 7.22 acres along Mark Brown Road; Troy Overby Sr. (General Commercial C‑2 to R‑5) for 4.13 acres at 4753 Tammy Dr.; Juan Vasquez (C‑2 to Low‑Density Single‑Family R‑2) for 0.83 acres at 2710 Pleasant Drive; and William Voyles (GA to R‑5) for 13.81 acres at 153 Stancil Road. The board denied Antonio Rodriguez’s request to rezone 0.52 acres on Orange Drive from R‑5 to C‑2. The rezoning package passed 4-0.
Commissioner Greg Jones moved, Commissioner Robbins seconded to accept a petition to close Audrey Drive and a portion of Timmy Lane (Land Lot 147, 9th district). Acceptance activates the process required by Georgia law to notify adjacent property owners and hold a public hearing; the board scheduled that public hearing for Oct. 11, 2021.
Separately, Commissioner Robby Staten moved, Commissioner Robbins seconded a motion registering no land‑use classification objection to tax parcel 11‑263‑01‑184 for an annexation by the City of Varnell; the motion passed 4-0.
Chairman Jevin Jensen introduced a first reading of an ordinance to amend Chapter 3 (Alcohol Beverages) to add sections allowing farm wineries and licensure. The board took no final action on the ordinance at first reading.
