Whitfield County meeting roundup: interpreter contract, CHIP application, ARPA expenditures, fire gear and freight-plan grant application

Whitfield County commissioners on Jan. 11 approved a series of routine contracts, grant-authorizations and ARPA-funded expenditures during their regular business meeting.
Contracts and procurement: the Board approved a 2022 Superior Court interpreter services contract with KRNW Inc. for $98,750. Commissioners approved continuation of the jail food services contract with Trinity Food Services Group Inc., covering food, contracted labor and administration. The Board also authorized a $63,500 purchase of Lion V-Force bunker gear for the Fire Department under Sourcewell contract pricing (local vendor NAFECO).
Grant applications and grant support: the Board adopted a resolution authorizing application for the 2022 Community Home Investment Program (CHIP), a HUD program administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs that will award up to seven $400,000 grants for owner-occupied single-family home rehabilitation. The Board approved contracting with Gilbert+Associates for CHIP grant-writing ($3,500, to be paid with ARPA funds) and, if awarded, grant administration ($6,000).
ARPA and personnel expenditures: the Board approved $62,437 previously expended from ARPA for 2021 new-hire bonuses, $10,014 allocated to the court A/V project (jail portion), and $6,459 in premium pay (including FICA) for three deputy coroners.
Planning and transportation: the Board approved submitting a $200,000 grant application through the Greater Dalton Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for a Regional Freight Network Plan; FHWA and GDOT would cover 80% of costs with a 20% local match. The MPO will solicit bids if funding is awarded, and the Board will consider the consultant contract when bids are returned.
Elections and administration: the Board adopted a resolution fixing qualifying fees for the 2022 elections, elected Commissioner Barry W. Robbins as Vice-Chairman for 2022, and approved commissioner appointments to local authorities. The Board also re-appointed four members to the Dalton-Whitfield Joint Development Authority.
