Whitfield County commissioners on Jan. 11 approved three rezoning requests recommended by the county planning commission and tabled a larger rezoning and special-use permit application from Dalton Quarries LLC.
Commissioner Greg Jones moved to approve the planning commission’s recommendations and Commissioner Robby Staten seconded; the motion passed 4-0. Approved requests include Elaine Smith’s petition to rezone 5.78 acres at 855 Reed Pond Road in Dalton from Low-Density Single-Family Residential (R-2) to General Agriculture (GA); Octavio Perez’s request to rezone 1.08 acres at 785 Beaverdale Road from R-2 to Rural Residential (R-5); and Armando Vasquez’s request to rezone 0.095 acres at 1705 Antioch Road from General Commercial (C-2) to R-5.
Separately, the Board tabled a consolidated rezoning and special-use permit request from Dalton Quarries LLC that sought to rezone multiple parcels (listed in the minutes) from a mix of zoning districts to Heavy Manufacturing (M-2) and to obtain a special use permit for quarry operations on approximately 673.96 acres along Dalton Beaverdale Road, Old Rock Crusher Road and Cherokee Estates Road. The minutes show the Board voted to table the item and did not approve the rezoning or special use at this meeting.
Why it matters: rezoning approvals and quarry proposals can change land-use patterns, traffic, and local environmental impacts. The minutes do not record conditions attached to the approved rezones nor a timetable or additional materials for the Dalton Quarries request; the Quarries application remains pending and will require future action by the Board.
The Board recorded no public comments on the matter in the meeting minutes.
