Engineering firm outlines landfill end‑of‑life options; City of Tifton has $13.7M earmarked for post‑closure and expansion

W. Michael Stubbs, P.E., of Hodges, Harbin, Newberry & Tribble, Inc., briefed the Tift County Board of Commissioners on Monday that the county landfill is approaching the end of its service life and that the county and City of Tifton need to decide whether to close the site or pursue expansion.
Stubbs presented three options for closing and/or expanding the landfill. City of Tifton Finance Director Larry Lawrence told the board the city has $8.3 million set aside for post‑closure costs and $5.4 million earmarked for future expansion. Commissioners agreed to schedule a workshop session at a later date for a fuller discussion of the options and funding implications.
County staff did not present a recommended option at the Feb. 13 meeting. The workshop will allow staff and elected officials to analyze engineering recommendations, cost estimates and potential funding partnerships between the county and City of Tifton.
