Summary
County staff said recent studies show the Tifton-Tift County landfill is likely to reach capacity in 2027 and a consultant will present disposal options to the Board at its Feb. 13 meeting; the county previously expanded the lined cell and had projected life to 2028.
A county consultant will outline disposal options for the Tifton–Tift County municipal landfill after staff reported studies showing the landfill is likely to reach capacity in 2027.
County Manager Jim Carter told the Board at the Feb. 7 workshop that the landfill’s lined Subtitle D cell was initially designed for about 2.5 million cubic yards of waste. A 2014 vertical expansion added an estimated 500,000 cubic yards and at the time extended the projected life to 2028. Recent studies, Carter said, now indicate the landfill will reach capacity a year earlier, in 2027.
Michael Stubbs, P.E., of engineering firm Hodges, Harbin, Newberry & Tribble is scheduled to present his firm’s report and several options for future solid waste disposal — including permitted expansions, interlocal agreements, or alternative disposal strategies — at the Board’s Feb. 13 regular meeting, Carter said.
The workshop discussion emphasized the practical need to decide how the county and the City of Tifton will handle municipal solid waste once the current cell fills. Carter said the county and city have jointly owned and operated the facility since it opened and that the parties will need to evaluate cost, permitting timelines and long-term capacity when considering options.
The Board did not take a formal vote at the workshop. Stubbs’s presentation and any staff recommendations are scheduled for the Feb. 13 meeting, when the Board could give direction or place items on a future agenda for decision.
