Screven County commissioners adopt code changes, approve election equipment and raise Extension salaries

The Screven County Board of Commissioners approved several operational and regulatory measures during its Jan. 14, 2020 meeting at the Screven County Courthouse.
Ella Rhodes, who appeared on behalf of Elections, outlined recent changes to voting machines and potential grant funding; Commissioner Michael McBride moved to approve additional election equipment at a cost of $19,019.00, and Commissioner J.C. Warren seconded. The motion carried by unanimous vote.
The board approved a $2,500 sign budget for the Battle of Briar Creek after Commissioner J.C. Warren moved the measure and Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded; the vote was unanimous.
On a more contested item, the board considered a code amendment to Chapter 62, Article II intended to more clearly define violations. Commissioner J.C. Warren moved to adopt the ordinance and Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded. Commissioners Warren, Romeo, McBride and Edwin Lovett voted in favor; Commissioners John O. Triplett, Will Boyd and Mike Dixon opposed. The amendment carried by majority vote. Later the board unanimously adopted a separate amendment to Chapter 62, Article III to modify penalties for violations after a motion from Commissioner Warren and a second from Commissioner Romeo.
Commissioner McBride moved, and Commissioner Romeo seconded, to approve an updated Memorandum of Understanding between UGA Cooperative Extension and Screven County and to authorize Chairman Will Boyd to execute it; the motion passed unanimously. Subsequently, Commissioner Mike Dixon moved to amend the county budget to increase the Extension Office salary budget by $8,500; Commissioner Romeo seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
