Airport Authority opposes county landfill plan as commissioners weigh inert-debris policy

Chairman Will Boyd convened the Screven County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 11, 2020, where Russell Waters, speaking for the Airport Authority, told the board the proposed waste disposal site at the county landfill is unsafe and said the Authority opposes it.
The airport representative asked to be informed of future meetings. Commissioner John O. Triplett continued a discussion of accepting inert debris at the landfill and said county consultant Doug Eaves recommends the county not accept that debris.
The exchange prompted public comments from residents: Ronnie Moore asked about locations for county dumpster sites, and Ben Wall requested a meeting with the Airport Authority to follow up on its concerns.
The board did not take a formal vote on changing landfill policy during the session. Commissioners discussed related operational items in reports (including dumpster locations at Village Road and Hiltonia Perkins Road) and left the matter for additional consideration and coordination with stakeholders.
Next steps recorded in the meeting minutes were limited to requests for further information and meetings; no policy change or formal direction to staff was adopted on the inert-debris question at this meeting.
