Screven County board approves roof repair for fire/EMS building, discusses SPLOST allocation for stations

Commissioner J.C. Warren made the motion to approve the county buying material and allowing an inmate crew to replace the roof; Commissioner Rosa Romeo seconded and the motion carried by unanimous vote.
During a broader budget discussion about fiscal year 2020–21, Finance Director and Personnel Officer Lori Boulineau said that during SPLOST discussions the board had discussed allotting "around $80,000" for fire stations but that a final decision had not been made. Commissioner Michael McBride said county mapping suggested nine additional stations would be needed to cover the county and said he would like the county to aim for adding about one station per year. Commissioner J.C. Warren asked Fire Chief Junior Cryder about the Insurance Services Office (ISO) ratings at current stations; Chief Cryder stated, "we are a 4/4x." Commissioner McBride also raised the option of increasing the fire fee to expand service coverage, including asking whether fees could be increased for residents who live within five miles of a station.
The board did not adopt a specific SPLOST allocation or a schedule for building new stations at the meeting. The approved roof work will proceed with county-purchased materials and an inmate crew; staff will return with additional budget details and recommendations for any future station funding or fee changes.
Next steps include a staff meeting among involved parties to address Recreation Department well issues raised elsewhere in the meeting and follow-up reporting on roof procurement and any SPLOST proposals.
