Commission approves forestry agreement, reappointments; manager details broadband, LMIG and solid‑waste plans

Fire‑tower agreement: The board authorized a Fire Tower Agreement with the Georgia Forestry Commission covering July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025. The county’s maximum payment under the contract is $4,738.58; the Forestry Commission will provide temporary fire‑tower operator(s) and will submit a bill to the county at the end of the contract period. Chairman Charles Coffey was authorized to execute the agreement following a motion to accept the fee schedule that passed unanimously.
Appointments and resolutions: Commissioners moved and unanimously approved resolutions reappointing Commissioner Timothy Biddle and Commissioner Gerald Douglas to the Lower Chattahoochee Regional Transportation Authority (Biddle through June 30, 2028; Douglas through June 30, 2026).
Manager and department updates: County Manager Thomas Weaver reported the county has begun collecting ambulance fees, that the cemetery work is nearly complete pending hydroseeding, and that the county submitted and received LMIG funding (an initial $155,000 check with a supplemental application pending to bring the total to about $355,000). Weaver also reported the sewer‑grant application has been completed and accepted.
Broadband and public works: Weaver said Charter/Spectrum with Bingham Construction will install fiber across much of the county; the project is expected to be in service around mid‑December and to reach roughly 90% of the county. Public Works reported finishing topsoil deliveries at the cemetery and that the long arm equipment is back in service.
Solid waste bids: The work session reviewed three proposals for solid‑waste collection: GFL at $20.00 per month (plus $5 per tire), Jones Sanitation at $23.50 per month, and Zero Waste at $25.52 per month. Commissioners directed the item be placed on the July 2 regular meeting agenda for a vote; the work session did not award the contract.
Other actions: The commission approved an employee insurance renewal and accepted the Georgia Forestry annual agreement fee schedule during the June 4 meeting. Chairman Coffey and staff discussed the need to confirm whether county property beside the library can be used for a community garden; staff will verify there is no conflict with fire department expansion plans.
Next steps: The county will receive an invoice from the Georgia Forestry Commission after the contract period; the solid‑waste contract award was scheduled for the July 2 meeting; and the broadband contractor projected initial service by mid‑December.
