Commission moves to revise cemetery rules, considers declaring courthouse‑adjacent buildings surplus

Chattahoochee County staff presented proposed amendments to county cemetery rules during the Jan. 26 work session and asked the commission to consider declaring two buildings adjacent to the courthouse surplus before demolition.
County Manager Thomas Weaver reviewed proposed cemetery changes intended to clarify eligibility and safety: allowing the purchase of more than one plot in certain circumstances (for example, a spouse or a resident who moved into assisted living late in life), imposing a one-time $500 purchase fee for plots, and banning glass on gravesites because of mower-safety and vandalism concerns. Commissioners agreed to add the cemetery rules and the fee proposal to the Feb. 3 regular-meeting agenda as voting items.
Separately, Weaver said county staff recommend declaring two buildings across from the courthouse surplus so the county can pursue demolition. The commission added that surplus-declaration item to the upcoming agenda for formal consideration.
