Summary
County facilities staff reported structural rot in the Bridlewood Barn at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds; the commission declared the structure surplus for destruction and approved demolition prior to the 2020 Sioux Empire Fair.
Minnehaha County facilities staff reported significant structural deterioration at the Bridlewood Barn located at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds and the commission voted June 23 to declare the building surplus for the purpose of demolition.
Mark Kriens, Facilities Director, described moisture accumulation at the base of the barn’s columns that led to rot and a loss of structural support. Carol Muller, Commission Administrative Officer, said repair of the columns would cost “over $100,000.00,” a figure that does not include replacement of rotted siding. Given the structural condition and the timing of the upcoming Sioux Empire Fair, commissioners agreed demolition was the prudent option.
The commission approved a motion to declare the Bridlewood Barn surplus for destruction; the structure is scheduled to be removed before the 2020 fair to eliminate a safety hazard. MOTION by Barth, seconded by Beninga; by roll call vote: 4 ayes.
