Minnehaha County approves rezoning to allow Midway Services expansion

The Minnehaha County Commission voted unanimously June 23 to approve Ordinance MC16-165-20, rezoning Tract 3 Wold Tracts (approximately 1.29 acres) from A-1 Agriculture to C Commercial to allow expansion of the existing Midway Services business.
David Heinold, Planner II, gave the second reading of Rezone #20-02 and said the property meets the Envision 2035 comprehensive plan criterion for locating commercial uses in existing rural service areas. Todd Ibis, Midway Service Controller, introduced himself to the commission as the petitioner’s representative. The Planning Commission had unanimously recommended approval on May 18, 2020.
Commissioner Beninga moved to approve the ordinance; Commissioner Barth seconded the motion. The measure passed by roll call vote, 4 ayes to 0. The full ordinance is on file in the Minnehaha County Auditor’s Office.
The rezoning allows Midway Services to expand operations at the state- and county-highway intersection about 4.5 miles south of Baltic. County staff noted the change aligns the parcel’s zoning with adjacent commercial activity and the county comprehensive plan guidance. No members of the public spoke in opposition during the hearing.
The ordinance’s approval completes the county’s formal zoning amendment process for Rezone #20-02; any development that follows must comply with applicable county permits and standards.
