Commission declines Consume & Blend alcohol license applications for private-property wedding

The Minnehaha County Commission voted July 14 to decline two Consume & Blend alcohol license applications for a Kasowski/Knodel prenuptial event and wedding scheduled for September 4–5, 2020, at a private residence in Hartford.
Olivia Larson, Deputy Auditor, explained the applications had been submitted and reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the Planning Department. The State’s Attorney’s Office advised that because the event is on private property the county’s permission is not required. Margaret Gillespie, Senior Deputy State’s Attorney, recommended the applications be processed and a final action recorded by the commission so the record was complete. On a motion by Commissioner Beninga, seconded by Commissioner Karsky, the board declined both Consume & Blend license applications on the basis that county permission is not needed. The motion passed by roll call vote: 4 ayes.
Consume & Blend licenses allow applicants to provide but not sell alcoholic beverages for consumption by event attendees; the commission’s action records the offices’ review and the SAO’s legal determination.
