Minnehaha County applies for state bridge grants for four county bridges, pledges 20% match

The Minnehaha County Commission on July 28 approved Resolution MC20-56 authorizing applications to the South Dakota Department of Transportation for Bridge Improvement Grant funding for four county bridge structures. The motion (moved by Commissioner Beninga and seconded by Commissioner Karsky) passed by roll call vote, 5–0.
Highway Superintendent DJ Buthe presented the request via videoconference and listed four structures by county structure number and location: Structure No. 50-180-134 over a tributary to the Big Sioux River near Crooks; Structure No. 50-237-120 over Slip-Up Creek near Baltic; Structure No. 50-272-030 over a tributary to West Pipestone Creek near Dell Rapids; and Structure No. 50-087-120 over the West Branch of Skunk Creek near Hartford. Buthe said these projects are listed in the county’s Five-Year County Highway and Bridge Improvement Plan.
The county certified the projects’ inclusion in its plan and agreed to a local participation equal to 20% of preliminary engineering costs if awards are made. Estimated county participation per structure for preliminary engineering was presented in the minutes as between $6,400 and $10,000. With the commission’s approval, the county authorized submission of the Bridge Improvement Grant applications to the state.
Commissioner Beninga moved to approve Resolution MC20-56; Commissioner Karsky seconded. The commission approved the resolution by roll call vote (5 ayes). The next step is submission of applications to the South Dakota Department of Transportation for award consideration.
