Juvenile Detention Center reports show fewer mental‑health holds and ongoing COVID-19 impacts

The Minnehaha County Commission received and placed on file the June 2020 Juvenile Detention Center Report and the 2020 second‑quarter report. Jamie Gravett, Juvenile Detention Center Director, presented highlights from the quarter and compared some measures with 2019.
Gravett said the number of intake calls in the comparable 2019 and 2020 periods differed, and that mental‑health holds were down compared with 2019. She identified the top five categories for intake calls (not enumerated in the minutes) and noted that the facility has not operated a nonsecure section since March 2020 because of COVID‑19 precautions. Erin Srstka, University of South Dakota Community Projects Director, spoke about the compilation of the reports and introduced two research associates, Dr. Bridget Diamond‑Welch and Claire Pierskalla, who organize and compile the data.
The reports were placed on file in the Auditor’s Office; the Commission did not record additional action on the items at the time of the meeting.
