County Counselor Jim Emerson updated the board on ongoing efforts to address trash along Highway 69, saying he met with Matt Sanders and KDOT representatives and that the county is pursuing multiple options, including an "Adopt a Highway" cleanup and convening a Solid Waste Committee with KDOT, the landfill and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Emerson said county grant writer Gus Brunetti is researching state solid waste grants that could fund equipment such as a bailer but may require a 45% local match. Commissioner Carl Wood said the county should not buy a bailer and that responsibility should rest with the state or the landfill; Commissioner Tom Moody asked whether the county could influence KDOT to pay closer attention to the area.
Emerson stated he was not proposing county match funds at this time but was keeping options open and pursuing a cooperative solution. No formal motion or funding approval for a bailer was recorded in the minutes.
