Charlotte County Electoral Board reviews January special election, approves poll workers for March primary

The Charlotte County Electoral Board met Feb. 8 at the General Registrar's Office and reviewed operations from a Jan. 12 special election, approved a poll-worker roster for the March presidential primary and prepared a budget recommendation to present to Administrator Dan Witt.
General Registrar Virginia Booth presented the registrar's packet, which included the written registrar's report, January meeting minutes, the Jan. 9 special election canvas minutes and a budget synopsis. Chairman Glenn Baker and Vice Chair Glenwood Foster, along with Secretary Aubrey Fane, participated in the approvals and discussion.
Booth reported the Jan. 12 special election drew a little over 1,000 votes. The registrar's packet listed line items for that election as $4,385.94 for ballots, programming, logic-and-accuracy testing and UPS shipping; $540.00 for training; and $5,259.72 for labor and travel related to training and election night. The board reviewed those figures as part of the monthly budget synopsis.
Booth also reported that early voting for the March presidential primary began Jan. 19 and that, as of the meeting date, 55 voters had cast early ballots. Absentee ballots mailed on Jan. 17 included 129 Democratic ballots and 38 Republican ballots. The registrar said new voter registration cards were mailed to notify voters of changed precinct locations in Phenix, Bacon/Saxe and Charlotte Courthouse.
On motions made and seconded at the meeting, the board approved the Jan. 4 meeting minutes (motion by Vice Chair Glenwood Foster; second by Secretary Aubrey Fane) and the Jan. 9 special election canvas minutes (read by Secretary Aubrey Fane; motion to accept by Foster; second by Fane). The board also updated and approved the list of poll workers for the March presidential (dual) primary on a motion by Foster, seconded by Fane; each motion passed without objection.
Members discussed and approved plans for signage and assigned personnel to direct voters at the new precinct locations, and they noted that delivery of voting machines and the practice of board members assisting on election day and starting the canvas process on election night "has been working very well" and will continue. The board also noted the local election security (LESS) report is due March 1 and referred members to an ELECT Security Advisory dated Jan. 31, 2024.
Board members scheduled a Feb. 9 meeting with Administrator Dan Witt to present the 2024–25 budget recommendation prepared by the registrar and the board.
There were no citizen comments. Secretary Aubrey Fane moved to adjourn at 3:22 p.m.; Vice Chair Glenwood Foster seconded, and the motion passed without objection.
