Charlotte County electoral board hears registrar report on Demtech support, approves minutes and plans poll-worker recruitment

The Charlotte County Electoral Board met May 2, 2024, approved the April 11 minutes and heard a report from General Registrar Virginia Booth about upcoming election operations and staffing.
Booth told the board she received an email from a vendor, Civics, indicating that the company will discontinue support for the Demtech poll-book system in Virginia at the end of November after the election. Booth said the county expects the Virginia support team will pick up those responsibilities and emphasized that the notice does not equal state decertification of the poll books; she said that if the state were to decertify the devices, the county would need to acquire new poll books. Booth also noted that early voting at the registrar's office is scheduled to begin the day after the meeting with office personnel on duty.
The board voted without objection to accept the April 11 minutes following a motion by Secretary Aubrey Fane. The vote was recorded as approved without objection.
Booth reviewed the roster of officers of election, naming precinct chiefs and other officers, and said the county can meet the statutory required number of officers for the June primary but is short of the board's target number of alternates and of affiliated nominees. To fill gaps, the board agreed to place an advertisement in the local newspaper and on the county website inviting residents to serve as officers or alternates.
There was a brief discussion about the appropriate use of unaffiliated poll workers; the board referenced Virginia Code §24.2-115 for guidance on who may serve and under what conditions. No formal change to policy was proposed or adopted at the meeting.
The meeting ended at 2:59 p.m. after a motion to adjourn by Secretary Aubrey Fane, seconded by Assistant Chairman Glenwood Foster, which carried without objection.
