Durham County schedules new hearing after discussion to rename building for Bill Bell

The Board opened and closed a public hearing Aug. 25 on a naming request for the William V. 'Bill' Bell Lobby after no members of the public spoke. Commissioners discussed whether to expand the naming from a lobby to an entire building.
Commissioner Stephen Valentine said Mr. Bell should be honored with a building name rather than a lobby; Vice Chair Dr. Mike Lee recommended suspending the County Naming Policy and renaming County Administration Building II for Bill Bell. County Attorney Larissa Williamson advised that the Board would need to advertise another public hearing to change the naming target; the Clerk confirmed the hearing could be advertised in time for the Sept. 8 Regular Session. Commissioners agreed to add the new public hearing to the Sept. 8 agenda.
No final renaming decision was recorded on Aug. 25; the Board took no formal vote to suspend the naming policy and instructed staff to return the item for the advertised public hearing.
