Durham County renames Administration II building for William V. “Bill” Bell

The Durham Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on Sept. 8 to rename County Administration II after William V. “Bill” Bell, a longtime local official, following a public hearing and a motion by Commissioner Michelle Burton.
Dr. Anjanée Bell, the applicant and daughter of Mr. Bell, addressed the Board during the public hearing asking that the building be named in honor of her father. Commissioner Stephen Valentine delivered an extended statement praising Bell’s career, saying, “The naming of the administration building across the street is in recognition of the life and legacy of William 'Bill' Bell. Mayor Bell is a local, state, national, and, I dare say, an international figure.”
The Board’s action came after the County Naming/Renaming Policy review and a recommendation from the county naming committee. Chair Nida Allam and other commissioners noted the symbolic value of the recognition for encouraging young people to consider public service; Commissioner Michelle Burton called the moment historic for the county.
The motion to rename the building was moved by Commissioner Burton, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, and passed on a unanimous voice vote. Members of the Bell family were present for the reading and remarks.
The renaming will proceed under the county’s administrative steps for building name changes as outlined in the naming policy; the Board did not outline additional budgetary implications during the meeting.
