Durham Public Health presents YRBS results, flags opt‑in change for 2025 survey

Savannah Carrico, a public health epidemiologist, presented findings from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and told the Board of County Commissioners that federal administration changes mean the 2025 YRBS will be opt‑in, requiring parental consent for student participation.
Bria Miller, Public Health Education Manager, summarized the 2024 State of the County Health (SOTCH) report, which updates Durham’s 2023 Community Health Assessment and identifies five county health priorities: affordable housing; access to health care and insurance; community safety and well‑being; mental health; and physical activity/nutrition/food access. Carrico said the department distributed the YRBS report to Durham public schools and youth offices and described outreach efforts; the board asked staff to produce a YRBS trend report, to provide annual YRBS and SOTCH presentations going forward, and to research whether Durham County could offer a county‑run opt‑out YRBS for Durham Public School students despite the CDC’s opt‑in change.
No formal action was taken during the work session; the board’s requests will guide follow‑up reporting from Public Health staff.
