Durham County hires consultant for food system assessment and 10-year strategic plan

Cooperative Extension Director Donna Rewalt and County Food Security Coordinator Reina Goldstein Bunnag presented the project scope and timeline. The vendor, Key Environmental Consulting, is new to the county; staff said the project will include community engagement, data and spatial analysis and periodic updates for stakeholders and the public.
The board asked for interim updates rather than a single final presentation. Rewalt and Bunnag said the vendor scheduled periodic stakeholder briefings and that county departments will serve on steering committees to support the plan’s development. Commissioner Michelle Burton moved to authorize the County Manager to execute the service contract (RFP 25-041); Vice Chair Dr. Mike Lee seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
The contract funds will be used to complete the assessment and draft the strategic plan. The Board thanked Cooperative Extension staff for advancing work on food security and building a framework intended to promote long-term food system sustainability in Durham County. The county did not specify an exact public reporting schedule beyond the pledge of periodic updates during the process.
