Fire chief and emergency management urge physical barriers after drivers ignore closed-road signs

Fire Chief Nathan Nation told the Spencer County Fiscal Court on Feb. 15 that crews have responded multiple times to incidents where motorists ignored posted "Road Closed" signs after severe weather, increasing the risk of crashes and hampering emergency responses. Chief Nation described two recent events in which his vehicle slid while responding and said a Rumpke garbage truck tipped the following day on similarly closed roads.

Chief Nation said signs alone were "not working," and urged the county to install physical barriers — such as swing-away gates that can remain in place and be opened for residents — at several problem locations. Emergency-management official Chris Limpp backed the call, saying the county needs a coordinated plan to prevent additional accidents and to make sure first responders can reach scenes safely.

Judge-Executive John Riley asked Chief Nation, Limpp and the road foreman to meet and return to the Court with a proposal. Chief Nation said there are about five or six locations under consideration and that closing the roads with gates "would not affect any homeowners," but would prevent through traffic from driving on unsafe surfaces.

The Court took no formal vote on the issue; members instructed staff and emergency services to develop options for discussion at a future meeting. The exchange followed the Judge's opening comments about county and state emergency declarations after severe weather and came amid broader conversation about road maintenance and public-safety staffing in the wake of storm-related damage.

Next steps: Chief Nation and Mr. Limpp will convene with the road foreman to identify specific closure locations and recommended barrier types and return to Fiscal Court with a plan and cost estimates.
