Simpson County Fiscal Court commits $1 million in COVID-relief funds to park project

The Simpson County Fiscal Court on Feb. 21 authorized committing $1,000,000 — including the remaining $726,000 in CARES Act funds — to a certificate of deposit designated for the county park. The motion was made by Magistrate Scott Poston and seconded by Magistrate Jeffrey Burr and carried unanimously.
Judge/Executive Mason Bames explained that the money includes federal COVID-relief allocations: CARES Act funds from 2020 and about $2.2 million received through the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021, and noted each fund has guidance and deadlines for use. County Treasurer Nicole Law was authorized to shop CD rates and execute the allocation when favorable terms are found.
Magistrate Marty Chandler asked that the city be contacted to discuss whether the City of Franklin might commit funds toward the park. The court did not set a construction schedule or a final project budget at the meeting; the action was limited to setting aside the funds in a CD.
The court approved the commitment by voice vote; the minutes record the motion and authorization and direct the treasurer to proceed with the CD placement.
